Gallery Spaces

Alternating Current Art Space comprises five distinct exhibition areas, each with its own character and possibilities. Whether you are a visitor planning your route through the gallery or an artist considering an application, here is what to expect from each space.

  • Gallery 1 – The main front gallery, street-facing with large windows. Illuminated until midnight Thursday through Sunday, offering a public-facing display visible to passersby on High Street.
  • Gallery 2 – A generous second exhibition space adjacent to Gallery 1, well-suited to painting, photography, and wall-based installations.
  • Gallery 3 – A more intimate space for focused, smaller-scale exhibitions or as part of a multi-room presentation.
  • Gallery 4 – A versatile room that can be completely blacked out, making it ideal for video works, projections, and light-based installations.
  • The Cupboard – A very narrow small project space that challenges artists to work within tight physical constraints. Suited to experimental, site-responsive, and conceptual projects.

Accessibility

Entry to the gallery is available through the front door via a portable ramp, or through the side gate and door. If you require ramp access or any other assistance, please ring the doorbell and a staff member or gallery sitter will be happy to help. Please note that there is no wheelchair-accessible toilet on the premises. We are committed to making the gallery as accessible as possible and welcome enquiries about specific accessibility needs.

Getting Here

By Tram

The gallery is well served by Melbourne's tram network. Take the No. 6 tram (Melbourne University to Glen Iris) and alight at Stop 32 (Bangs Street / Hornby Street), which is directly adjacent to the gallery. Alternatively, catch the No. 78 tram (North Richmond to Balaclava via Prahran) and alight at Stop 45 (High Street), then walk approximately 250 metres east to reach us.

By Train

Take a train to Windsor Station on the Sandringham line. From the station, walk north along Chapel Street and turn right onto High Street. The gallery is approximately 250 metres along on the left-hand side. The walk takes around three to four minutes.

By Car

There is limited street parking available on High Street and surrounding residential streets. For longer visits, a multi-storey car park is available at 8–14 King Street, Prahran, just a couple of blocks from the gallery. Please observe local parking restrictions and time limits.

The Neighbourhood

Windsor and the surrounding Chapel Street precinct offer plenty to do before or after your gallery visit. The area is home to some of Melbourne's best cafes, restaurants, bars, and independent retail. Chapel Street itself is one of Melbourne's most iconic shopping and cultural strips, stretching from South Yarra through Prahran to Windsor. High Street connects to this precinct and has its own distinct character, with a mix of specialty shops, studios, and creative businesses that reflect the area's strong artistic identity.
